Killing Me Softly

Fulham have done it again, they've found a way to lose the game after the 80th minute. I guess we shouldn't be satisfied with regular losses anymore; now we are approaching a whole new level of crashing and burning....

On a positive note, Brian McBride should be back around Christmas time, meaning that his freakish patella (that's your knee-cap, Dan) dislocation is not as serious as first thought. If I were anyone in a Fulham shirt, I don't think I'd go near that armband for a while.

Fulham have also added a fourth Yank to their payroll. Mr. Kasey Keller has signed for the Whites, supposedly to provide backup to the backup. However, Fulham's #2 is worse that me, when I'm inebriated. I'm just waiting for the announcement from MLS that DaBruce is leaving RBNY to join Lawrie Sanchez's backroom staff.

The US U-17's were gifted a berth into the second round of their World Cup. I do not know much about them, except for this one thing: they were amongst the favorites to take the title home this year. Then they go out and lose to Tajikistan. Seriously! Tajikistan! I might have a Lewis Black style anuerism. Then they were unlucky to fall behind 1-0 to Tunisia on a horrible hand-ball call in the box. {Note: When someone shoots the ball and your hand happens to be in the direct path, it is not a foul/penalty worthy offense} But to go on and lose 3-1, why not just throw 11 sticks out on the field and fly your asses home early. Anyways, they made it in by beating up on another World Soccer Power that was in their group [that was sarcasm] and now will face the Germans in the second round. I can't wait to see how this turns out....

All of this happening just days after the real reason I'm posting:
What is it with everyone in this freakin' country and treating footie like it's football of the padded variety. The beauty of our game is that it is fluid and demands instant decision making and creativity. Within 4 days of each other I ran into two instances of people talking about coaching "plays" in soccer. After that dreadful word came out of the second person's mouth, I simply walked away. I don't have enough brain cells left to convince you of why you're wrong.

My fiancee and I argue, back and forth for hours, about whether or not there exists a right and wrong way to play the game. We may not be able to agree on that but one thing we can agree on is that there is a wrong way to teach the game. Our football cannot be taught as some rigid process of events, otherwise we end up with tremendous athletes who cannot hold their own when faced with a mid-level opponent. Our football must be taught as a you, the player, have many choices at hand, and there are some that are better than others, but there isn't one do this every time choice.

These coaches who teach the game this way, yell at players for switching positions on the fly, and think that winning is the most important thing (for a developing soccer nation, we should be focusing on playing the game well and winning will follow), and referees who call EVERY little nudge and bump are driving me insane. It makes me so angry and dumbfounded to think about how these people continue to impact soccer at the youth level that it truly is killing me inside

-It's time for some pancakes, I'm out.
